Futuristic Fridges

A small company MD had an idea for a single refrigerator able to keep foods and wine at different temperatures. Consultancy with the University of Bristol confirmed the idea was viable, and the collaboration has resulted in a highly successful commercial product.

Benefits of the collaboration

  • Successful commercial product developed -awarded the European Award for Distinguished Development Design
  • Ongoing collaboration with University, and opportunity to test research in commercial situation
  • Technology licensed to international appliance manufacturers and producers of foodservice equipment

Ian Wood, Managing Director of a small oil & gas engineering consultancy company, knew his sector was contracting and he needed to find a new focus. Ian overheard a remark that the problem with refrigeration was that every time the door opened, cold air is replaced by moist warm air, causing unstable conditions.

"We need a refrigeration unit to keep the champagne chilled, the dessert frozen and the cheese at just the right temperature."

Having obtained funding, Adande Refrigeration was born and Ian began the process of developing VariCool. Ian knew he needed technical input to develop his idea and contacted Judith Evans, a refrigeration expert in the Food, Refrigeration and Process Engineering Research Centre at the University of Bristol.

Ian and Judith set up a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), which offered government funding and academic support to employ a recent graduate on the project. With regular advice from University staff, the Mark 1 VariCool was built. Three units were tested in busy commercial kitchens, feedback led to further developments and the product is now in production. A second model has been patented, with reduced production costs, easier manufacture and improved performance. Adande has maintained links with the University for ongoing advice and testing. Adande has expanded from five to 15 employees.

"A project that began with a chance encounter has developed through the determination, enterprise and dedication of Adande and the team at the University, turning VariCool into a successful commercial product."
